I was born in Bromley, Kent back in the early seventies. I spent most of my childhood riding bikes, playing tag and kicking tin cans around the street, unless there was an actual football to hand. At the age of fourteen I had a milestone experience. Prior to that I had never shown the slightest interest in writing, if I remember rightly I wanted to be an astronaut, but then I got put into detention one afternoon. I had failed to bring in my homework assignment and the teacher had punished me by forcing me to write a short story during the lunch time break. When did you first consider yourself “a writer”?

Well, I suppose what you’re getting at here is not me as a snotty-nosed teenager giving myself literary graces and ambitions (as we all did , I suppose) but when I first really thought I’d achieved something that designated me as a writer. The first ‘proper’ thing I got published was an article in a learned educational journal (I’m an English teacher), but I reckon it was when I started getting poems accepted fairly regularly by magazines that I tentatively started to think of myself as a writer. I’ve been a poet much longer than a novelist, although writing prose is my ‘mania’ at present.

When you write, do you write the story you want to write or do you write what you think will sell?

I write what I want to write, and where the story takes me. Sometimes that isn’t where I planned to go and often it takes a while and several false turns to get there but the story will get there in the end. What sells and what doesn’t isn’t easy the fathom, even a great book needs to be found, and even a bad one might sell well enough with determined marketing, or a lot of luck, at least for a while.  No book is guaranteed to sell.

How do story ideas and characters come to you?

When did you first consider yourself “a writer”?

When I was ten years old. Really, I enjoyed reading stories and discovered the fun of writing stories at school. I did attempt my first novel then, but the real inspiration would come over forty years later.

I honestly write what comes to me. I haven’t yet thought much about what would sell. Then again what does sell?
