He is allowed to go to the tournament with her on the promise that he will bring her back alive. Alex is forced to make another similar promise to his grieving mother before she will let her only son out of her sight.

Mercy strongly believes Alex has the ability to survive anything, but Alex doesn’t think so. And at the training camp, when the day of the tournament draws closer and Alex sees the thirty-eight other bigger and stronger youths they are to battle against, he isn’t sure he can keep his promises anymore.
